The Federal Commissioner for Data Protection, Louisa Specht-Riemenschneider, has sharply criticized the plans by the black-red coalition to amend the Freedom of Information Act. She warns of a de facto abolition of unconditional access to official information and of discrimination.

The Federal Commissioner for Data Protection, Louisa Specht-Riemenschneider, has criticized the plans to amend the Freedom of Information Act (IFG) agreed upon in the coalition committee of the CDU, CSU, and SPD as undemocratic and discriminatory.

Core of the Planned Reform

In an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND), Specht-Riemenschneider warned of a de facto abolition of the disclosure regime that has been in place for around twenty years. The IFG came into force in 2006 and grants citizens access to official information and documents. The Commissioner explained that the "wesentliche Grundgedanke eines grundsätzlich voraussetzungslosen Zugangs zu amtlichen Informationen" would be "ins Gegenteil verkehrt, wenn zukünftig ein berechtigtes Interesse an der Information dargelegt werden müsste".
