Berlin, July 3, 2026

The federal government has presented plans for a fundamental reform of the Freedom of Information Act (IFG) that would drastically narrow the circle of those entitled to file requests and exclude transparency organizations, media companies, and legal entities from making inquiries.

Key Planned Provisions of the Reform

As Deutschlandfunk reported on July 3, 2026, the reform plans are currently being drawn up at the Federal Ministry of the Interior under the leadership of Alexander Dobrindt (CSU). A ministry spokesperson confirmed the plans on Friday upon inquiry, citing the coalition agreement and the resolution of the coalition committee of July 1, 2026, as the basis. The concrete design was a matter of internal government processes, the spokesperson added.
