Vienna, 11 June 2026

The Austrian federal government on Wednesday adopted in the Council of Ministers a draft aimed at re-regulating the period of validity of assisted dying arrangements, which is to be submitted to parliament after an expert review period ending on 24 June.

The proposal presented by Justice Minister Anna Sporrer (SPÖ) provides that assisted dying arrangements (Sterbeverfügungen) should continue to be valid for only one year, but can be renewed within a five-year period through a simplified procedure. The federal government justified the draft it had introduced with the 'reference to the already-expired deadline'. In doing so, it responded to a requirement of the Constitutional Court, which had set a deadline of 1 June 2026 for the remedy of the annulled provision; that deadline has already expired.
