According to a media report, the federal government is planning to withdraw Deutsche Post's controversial VAT exemption for business mail, thereby collecting an additional 115 million euros per year.
According to information from the news magazine "Der Spiegel," which has seen the documents, the Federal Ministry of Economics has drawn up a corresponding draft law. The dpa confirmed the plans. According to the draft law, the federal government could receive 115 million euros in additional revenue per year through the new regulation — from the Post.
Specifically, this concerns business mail, i.e., letters that companies send to other companies or customers. Deutsche Post delivers billions of letters year after year, the majority of which is business mail, whether advertising or invoices. In future, the still partly state-owned group will no longer be exempt from VAT when it collects and distributes business mail.
