The new Koralmbahn is having an effect: on the A2 Southern Motorway, car traffic in the Koralm corridor has declined by 4.6 percent, while the Austria-wide average saw only a decrease of 0.6 percent.

Data basis and regional comparison

The Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ) referred on Tuesday to data from motorway operator Asfinag, which show a clear decline in car traffic on the A2 Southern Motorway. In the so-called Koralm corridor – the catchment area of the new Koralmbahn – the number of cars fell by 4.6 percent. Nationwide, the decline over the same period was just 0.6 percent. The drop was thus significantly stronger in the Carinthia region than in the rest of Austria.

The VCÖ attributes this development directly to the launch of the Koralmbahn. The new rail line connects Styria and Carinthia via a significantly faster direct connection and makes the switch from car to rail attractive for many commuters. In the transport club's view, the example is evidence that well-developed rail infrastructure can have tangible effects on road traffic.
