Fiber optic expansion in Neunkirchen begins in July: around 2,800 households to be connected

The first construction work is already underway in the Schlemmergasse and Kochstraße areas. During the excavation and laying work, disruptions are to be expected in these street sections. Alpen Glasfaser announced that residents would be informed about the progress of the work.

Mayor Peter Teix sees the project as an important development step for the city. Speaking to regional media, he emphasized that fast internet is nowadays a crucial requirement for families as well as businesses.

Mayor sees location advantage

"Für viele Familien und Unternehmen ist schnelles Internet heutzutage eine wichtige Standortvoraussetzung", Teix stated. With the expansion, Neunkirchen will receive a future-proof infrastructure designed to last for the coming years.

The expansion will proceed in stages. After the start in the inner-city areas, additional districts and surrounding communities such as Schöngrabern are to be connected in the following phases. Alpen Glasfaser did not initially provide a concrete timetable for the subsequent steps.

Fiber optic lines enable significantly higher transmission rates compared to conventional copper or cable connections. This is relevant for home office, video conferencing, streaming, and data-intensive applications, among other things. Municipalities also hope this will provide location advantages in attracting businesses.

What fiber optics means for households

The expansion will require civil engineering works along roads and sidewalks. Alpen Glasfaser aims to keep the disruptions as minimal as possible and to maintain operations in adjacent businesses and households. Exactly when the first connections will be activated depends on construction progress.

The city administration is accompanying the project and, according to its own statements, is in close exchange with the network operator. The goal is to keep the construction period as short as possible and to minimize the impact on residents and traffic, according to the city hall.

Teix also sees the project as an opportunity for the regional economy: "Mit dem Ausbau erhält Neunkirchen eine zukunftssichere Infrastruktur", the mayor said. This will allow the city to better compete for skilled workers and businesses.

The fiber optic expansion in Neunkirchen is part of a broader strategy by several Austrian municipalities to better connect rural and small-town areas to fast data networks. The expansion is generally financed and implemented by private providers such as Alpen Glasfaser, partly with funding from the federal government and the state.

Construction work and timetable

Residents who wish to have a fiber optic connection can already choose a tariff according to the provider. The costs for the home connection often depend on the location of the building and the scope of the necessary work on the property.

With the start of the major project, Neunkirchen expects additional construction sites, traffic disruptions, and coordination between the city, providers, and property owners in the coming weeks. Once the first sections are completed, the new connections are to be activated gradually.

Alpen Glasfaser described Neunkirchen as an important hub in the regional data network. The company announced that it intends to invest in additional municipalities in the district in the coming years. This is intended to gradually bring rural areas up to speed with digital infrastructure.
