Budapest, June 13, 2026

Viktor Orbán was confirmed on Saturday at a Fidesz party congress in Budapest by a large majority for another year as party chairman, even though his party had lost the parliamentary election in April.

In the vote at the party congress in Budapest, according to the available figures, 729 votes were cast for Orbán, no votes against were counted, and eight delegates abstained. The former prime minister, who holds the office of Fidesz chairman, thus remains at the helm of the party — described as right-wing nationalist — for at least the next twelve months. His mandate at the top of the party is limited to one year.

Defeat in the April Parliamentary Election

The party congress took place barely two months after the parliamentary election of April 12, in which the opposition party Tisza, under Péter Magyar, was able to win a two-thirds majority in parliament. Fidesz thus moved into opposition, and Orbán had already taken responsibility for the defeat immediately after the election.
