FIFA has surprisingly suspended for one year on probation the automatic match ban that US striker Folarin Balogun would have had to serve in the World Cup Round of 16 against Belgium, reportedly after US President Donald Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The 25-year-old attacker Balogun was sent off in the USA's round-of-32 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina (2-0) following a VAR review by Brazilian referee Raphael Claus, because he had unintentionally stepped on the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic. The ban for at least one subsequent match resulted automatically under FIFA tournament rules from Article 66.4 of the Disciplinary Catalogue in conjunction with Article 10.5 of the Tournament Regulations.
