Zurich, June 5, 2026

About a week before the start of the 2026 Football World Cup in Mexico, Canada, and the USA, FIFA has announced that in the opening ceremony of every match, all 26 players of a squad will stand on the pitch during the national anthems.

What is changing for the anthem?

FIFA is thus significantly expanding the pre-match ceremony. Previously, during the playing of the national anthems, usually only the players of the starting eleven stood at the edge of the pitch together with the substitute players, coaches, and staff. In the future, all 26 players of each team will gather around a banner in the center circle. FIFA justifies this step with the desire to involve every single player in the symbolic moment. "During the national anthems, all 26 players of each team will gather around the banner in the center circle so that each one of them – not just the starting eleven – can experience this symbolic moment with pride and emotion," the world governing body announced.
