Berlin, 14 July 2026
To mark the fifth anniversary of the July 2021 flood disaster, commemorative events began on 14 July 2026 in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, attended by, among others, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
During the night of 14 to 15 July 2021, several rivers and streams in the two federal states burst their banks following heavy rainfall. The flood disaster is considered one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent German history. A total of 184 people lost their lives, 136 of them in Rhineland-Palatinate and 49 in North Rhine-Westphalia. There were also fatalities in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Saxony.
