Fire Department Rescues Roe Deer from Private Swimming Pool in St. Florian

Fire department emergency forces set out that same evening and recovered the animal from the water basin. The roe deer was then released at a suitable outdoor location, where it was able to recover from the shock and the cold.

According to the helpers, the animal was weakened during the rescue but basically in good health. No injuries were detected during the recovery, according to the emergency forces.

The rescue operation proceeded without complications. The pool itself remained intact, as the fire department emphasized. There had been no danger to people at any time; only the animal had been in distress.

Why Deer End Up in Pools

From the perspective of animal rescue experts, such operations in residential areas are not uncommon. Wild animals, especially deer, more frequently seek the proximity of human dwellings during the summer months, for example in search of water, and can fall into swimming pools, ornamental ponds, or other lower-lying water surfaces in the process.

Because deer are not swimmers and the smooth basin material offers them no grip, they have little chance of freeing themselves in such situations. Even a ladder or a sloped entry edge, which is present in many pools, usually does not help when the animal is paddling in the water in a panic.

The fire department recommends that pool owners be vigilant with rarely used basins near forests or on the edge of town. A simple cover at night or a wildlife barrier at the pool edge can prevent wild animals from falling in.

After the operation, the fire department expressly thanked the attentive pool owner who had made the emergency call. Without his quick action, the rescue of the roe deer might have turned out differently.
