In a fire in the nursery of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in the capital Islamabad, at least 14 babies were killed.
The fire broke out on Tuesday in the hospital's neonatal ward and spread rapidly before rescue services could intervene. The exact background and cause of the fire were initially unclear, as Pakistani media reported, citing hospital information.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his dismay at the incident and ordered an immediate investigation. He extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The hospital management and rescue services were also instructed to provide all available information.
