A fire on the maternity ward of the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad killed 15 infants in the early hours of Tuesday morning; Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered an immediate investigation.
According to broadcaster Geo News, the fire broke out around 7 a.m. local time on the third floor of the hospital, which houses the maternal and child health department. Rescue services were alerted in the early morning hours and brought the blaze under control after several hours. Islamabad police confirmed that 15 newborns were killed.
Background: Investigations into the cause of the fire
Initial investigations led police to believe that a defect in an air-conditioning unit triggered the fire. The responsible authorities stated that the entire incident would now be examined for technical shortcomings and possible safety failures. Officials also announced that the victims' families would be compensated.
