Five Gold Prospectors Rescued Alive After More Than a Week Trapped in Flooded Laos Cave

The Rescue Operation

Rescuers are pumping water out of the cave to make the exit passable and are also checking whether water could enter the cave again. The extraction of the five men could begin later the same day, according to initial reports.

A total of ten villagers were searching for gold when heavy rainfall suddenly flooded the cave and a landslide blocked the exit. Three of the ten villagers managed to escape and raise the alarm, leaving seven trapped.

Two additional missing persons are still being searched for. Local media reported that the two other missing men had also been found alive, but this was not initially confirmed by official sources.

International Support and Expert Involvement

International cave-diving specialists are supporting the rescue mission. Finnish cave diver Mikko Paasi, who previously assisted in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand, stated on social media that the extraction could be extremely difficult.

Paasi posted a video showing him navigating extremely narrow cave passages with brown water and eventually finding the five trapped men. The video appeared to show at least two of the men wearing functional headlamps.

Rescuers had to crawl through extremely narrow passages and dive through tight underwater sections in recent days to reach the trapped group. According to media reports, the men had carried sufficient supplies to survive several days in the cave.

Echoes of Tham Luang

Lao authorities requested assistance from Thailand due to Thailand's experience with complex cave rescues. The 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in northern Thailand involved an international operation with specialist divers and lasted more than two weeks.

The rescue effort has drawn comparisons to the Tham Luang operation, which captured global attention when twelve young football players and their coach were trapped in a flooded cave. That rescue also relied heavily on international cave-diving expertise.

Rescue Volunteer for People and MTK have been coordinating the search and supply efforts since the alarm was raised. The remote location and challenging terrain have complicated the operation, with rescuers facing narrow passages and rising water levels.
