Five Gold Prospectors Rescued Alive After More Than a Week Trapped in Flooded Laos Cave

Rescue workers found the five men unharmed after a days-long search. The trapped men were supplied with food and medicine, according to the Lao rescue organization Rescue Volunteer for People.

The five men are exhausted and hungry but in stable condition, according to rescue workers. Medical teams were on standby to treat the men immediately after their extraction.

Complex Rescue Operation

Rescuers had to crawl through extremely narrow passages and dive through tight underwater sections in recent days. Finnish cave diver Mikko Paasi posted a video showing him navigating extremely narrow cave passages with brown water in Laos and eventually finding the five trapped men.

Paasi stated on social media that the extraction could prove extremely difficult. "Die Bergung könnte sich als extrem schwierig erweisen," he wrote.

Rescuers are pumping water out of the cave to make the exit route passable and are also checking whether water could enter the cave again. Additional helpers are being organized for transport from the remote area, which is traversed by mountains and jungle.

International cave-diving specialists are supporting the rescue mission. Lao authorities requested assistance from Thailand due to Thailand's experience with complex cave rescues.

Echoes of Tham Luang

In 2018, twelve young football players and their coach were trapped for more than two weeks in the flooded Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand and were freed by an international rescue operation involving specialist divers. Mikko Paasi previously assisted in that rescue.

Local media reported on Tuesday morning that the two other missing men had also been found alive, but this was not initially confirmed. Two additional people remain missing and the search is ongoing.

The extraction of the five men began later the same day. The remote location and challenging terrain continue to complicate the ongoing search and transport efforts.
