Five gold prospectors were rescued alive from a flooded cave in northern Laos on Tuesday after being trapped for more than a week, rescue organizations announced.
The rescue was announced in the afternoon local time by the Laotian rescue organization Rescue Volunteer for People and the Thai rescue unit MTK. The men had been trapped in the cave in Longchaeng district, Xaisomboun province, since May 19.
A total of ten villagers were searching for gold when heavy rainfall suddenly flooded the cave and a landslide blocked the exit. Three of the ten managed to escape and raise the alarm, leaving seven trapped.
The Entrapment
According to media reports, the men had carried sufficient supplies to survive several days in the cave. Videos filmed by rescuers inside the cave appeared to show at least two of the trapped men wearing functional headlamps.
