Flash flood in the Himalayas sweeps away villages on the Nepal-China border – many casualties feared

Near the border with China's Autonomous Region of Tibet, entire villages were washed away, according to authorities. Roads, bridges, and power plants were damaged, severely restricting access to the disaster zone and further complicating the delivery of relief to the population.

Background: The Bhotekoshi River

Chinese President and Party leader Xi Jinping demanded that the missing be searched for with all available resources and that people in the region be brought to safety, Xinhua reported. The Chinese leadership responded directly to the disaster, which also affected the Tibetan side of the border area.

Nepalese authorities and the military launched rescue and evacuation operations, according to their own statements. However, because of the destroyed transportation routes, access to the affected settlements is difficult, meaning the full extent of the damage and the number of missing persons cannot yet be conclusively determined.

China's Response and Evacuations

The flash flood was triggered by heavy rainfall in the high reaches of the Himalayas, which converged into a raging torrent in the narrow river valleys of the Bhotekoshi. Such events occur regularly in the region during the monsoon season, but take on particular destructive force due to the narrowness of the valleys and the proximity to settlements.

Bagmati province, through which the Bhotekoshi flows, is one of the most densely populated regions of Nepal along the northern border. Reports of destroyed homes and disrupted power supplies are mounting, while relatives in the affected areas desperately search for family members.

The Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that the search for the missing and the evacuation of further residents from the endangered valley areas were the top priority. Precautionary measures were also taken on the Tibetan side to move residents from areas at risk of flooding to higher-lying locations.

Rescue Operations and International Aid

International aid organizations are preparing for operations in the hard-to-reach region, according to their own statements. The Nepali government is coordinating relief efforts through the Ministry of Disaster Management, while neighboring countries signaled their readiness to provide assistance.

Eyewitnesses from the affected villages reported that water levels rose suddenly, sweeping away houses, fields, and paths within minutes. Many families lost all their possessions in a short time and sought refuge on higher slopes.

Climate researchers have long pointed out that extreme weather events in the high mountain valleys of the Himalayas are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change. Glacier melt and altered precipitation patterns heighten the risk of so-called glacial lake outburst floods and flash floods, which often strike entire valleys without warning.

Risks from Monsoon and Climate Change

Meteorologists expect further rainfall in the region over the coming days, which could further hamper the work of rescue teams. Authorities warned the population to avoid low-lying areas along the Bhotekoshi and its tributaries for the time being.

The government in Kathmandu announced it would provide financial support to the affected families and would promptly begin the reconstruction of the destroyed infrastructure. The exact number of fatalities and missing persons is still being determined and is to be announced in the coming days, once all remote areas have been reached.
