Flash flood sweeps Rasuwa district near Nepal-Tibet border, villages and hydropower projects hit

Rasuwa district, home to roughly 50,000 people, sits in a steep valley system that feeds into the Bhotekoshi River, which flows toward the Tibet border. The terrain makes the area particularly exposed to glacial lake outburst floods and ice-avalanche events that have become more frequent in the region as mountain temperatures rise.

Why Rasuwa is exposed

Local officials reported that several villages along the Lhende Khola were washed away or cut off by the surge, and that at least one hydropower installation under construction in the district sustained significant damage, according to AP reporting. Power infrastructure near the Tibet border has been a focus of investment from both Nepal and China, making the area economically as well as geographically sensitive.

Indian and Chinese authorities have historically monitored Himalayan rivers that cross their borders, and cross-border rivers in the region have been the subject of data-sharing arrangements. The Lhende Khola and Bhotekoshi systems drain southward through Nepal into the broader Ganges basin, which means downstream hydrology in India can be affected by events in Rasuwa.

Search and rescue teams from Nepal's security forces, along with local volunteers, were deployed to evacuate residents from the worst-hit hamlets and to look for people reported missing after the surge. Relief supplies, including tents and food, were being moved into the district as road access remained partially blocked by debris.

Officials warned that the river could rise again if the natural dam formed by the avalanche releases more water, and they urged downstream settlements to remain on alert. Sanyal noted that the Lhende Khola has now overflowed twice in 14 months, underscoring how vulnerable the basin has become.

Prime Minister's office representatives said they were in contact with district administrators and with officials in the hydropower sector to assess the damage. Hydropower developers reported that access roads to several project sites had been cut, complicating damage assessments and delaying repair work.

Regional climate context

The event comes as researchers across the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region continue to document accelerating glacier retreat and more frequent glacial lake outburst floods. Specialists say the combination of warming temperatures, unstable moraines and heavy monsoon rainfall is increasing the likelihood of similar surges elsewhere in Nepal in the coming years.

India and China, which both share borders with affected Himalayan terrain, have not yet released formal statements on the flood, though diplomatic channels were reported to be open. Cross-border coordination on early warning for glacial floods has been a recurring topic in regional climate talks.

For families in Rasuwa, the immediate priority is shelter and the search for relatives who were caught by the water. Local leaders have appealed for additional tents, medicines and helicopter support to reach cut-off communities still waiting for news of missing neighbors.
