Beijing, July 7, 2026

After severe storms and flooding in southern China that killed at least five people, Super Typhoon "Bavi," with peak wind speeds well over 200 kilometers per hour, is moving toward the southeast of the country, while a landslide in Tanchang County threatens to bury 33 people.

In several Chinese provinces, heavy rainfall and cyclones have caused significant damage in recent days. According to official figures, five people lost their lives, while 17 have so far been rescued. Wind speeds of up to 149 kilometers per hour tore roofs off buildings and overturned cars.

Landslide in Gansu worsens the situation

According to Chinese state television reports, a landslide in Tanchang County in the northwestern province of Gansu buried a total of 33 people. This worsens the situation in a region already affected by the continuous rainfall.

Weather authorities consider the situation to remain tense, as Typhoon "Bavi" is moving from the Pacific toward southeastern China. A super typhoon is a cyclone that reaches sustained maximum wind speeds of 241 kilometers per hour or more. The currently forecast peak values are well above the threshold of an ordinary typhoon.
