The US rock band Foo Fighters played a concert with 28 songs at Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium on Friday evening in front of around 55,000 visitors.

Stadium and Opening Act

The show kicked off at 8:00 p.m. – a circumstance likely also due to the fact that the stadium was already hosting the band's seventh Austria concert. Opening acts Fat Dog and Idles warmed up the fans at a summery 26 degrees Celsius.

Frontman Dave Grohl opened with a direct address to the audience: "Na ratet mal: Wir haben etwas Rock 'n' Roll für euch, Motherfuckers", he became clear already with "The Pretender" and kept his word for 28 songs in Vienna.

However, the brutal rock songs tempted the 57-year-old to frequent shrieking and screaming. Only gradually did the sextet show more facets of its sound, such as the reflective, few-tone-based guitar intro to "The Pretender." Soon "My Hero", "Learn to Fly", and "These Days" followed – songs in which the band showed how well it can combine powerful rock with catchy melodies.

Old School Meets 55,000

No-frills old-school rock for ladies & gentlemen: "Wie viele von euch sind old school?", asked Dave Grohl after a few songs. Immediately, 55,000 throats screamed a hearty "Ich" back at the frontman. "Jeder Einzelne von uns hat gesagt: Das ist die schönste Stadt der Welt!" – with flattery about Vienna and the formal address "Ladies & Gentleman," Grohl led through the evening.
