The consumer organization Foodwatch announced on Friday that Austrians will have mathematically reached their recommended maximum annual sugar intake by August 3, 2026.

This puts Austria far ahead in international comparisons of sugar consumption. As Foodwatch Austria reported, people in this country take in so much sugar through soft drinks that the country ranks second among European comparison countries, behind Germany. The United Kingdom is also among the particularly sugar-rich markets.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends keeping the share of free sugar in daily energy intake below ten percent, and ideally below five percent. In reality, many people are well above that. According to Foodwatch, soft drinks such as lemonades, iced teas, or energy drinks alone contribute disproportionately to sugar intake: a single 0.5-liter bottle can easily contain ten to twelve sugar cubes.
