The major fire in the Föhrenwald has been spreading for days through the forest area around the municipality of St. Egyden. The affected region is located in the district of Neunkirchen in southern Lower Austria and poses particular challenges for emergency services due to the sloping terrain and dry weather conditions.

Stefan Loidl, mayor of the municipality of St. Egyden, had previously sharply criticized that the municipality was being left in the lurch in the fight against the forest fire. The municipality of Steinfeld, which is also located near the fire area, has according to current information not been affected to the same extent as St. Egyden. Nevertheless, the local emergency readiness is monitoring the situation closely, as changes in wind could carry the fire source in other directions.

The operations command expects that the firefighting work will continue for several more days. The weather conditions with persistent dryness and shifting winds make the work of the fire departments more difficult. According to the emergency personnel, there is currently no all-clear in sight.

The support from Mödling is part of a broader cross-regional aid operation in which other fire departments from the surrounding area are participating.
