Phosphorus residues from munition parts of a factory destroyed at the end of World War II have triggered another forest fire in the Föhrenwald in Lower Austria, as emergency services announced on Sunday. Only a few days earlier, a fire had raged at the same location in the municipal area of St. Egyden am Steinfeld in the district of Neunkirchen.

Why Phosphorus of All Things

During the investigation into the cause, it was confirmed that phosphorus from old munition parts also ignited the second fire, said a fire department spokesperson. He stated verbatim: "Das war auch schon die Ursache für den ersten Brand einige Tage zuvor."
