A major fire in the Föhrenwald in St. Egyden am Steinfeld in the district of Neunkirchen was triggered on Wednesday by ammunition parts, with more than 550 firefighters deployed.
The Föhrenwald in Lower Austria has been the scene of a major fire since Wednesday, which according to authorities was caused by ammunition parts. According to the Neunkirchen District Fire Brigade Command, more than 550 firefighters were dispatched to battle the flames. The operation lasted several hours and tied up significant regional firefighting resources.
The extinguishing efforts were supported from the air, among other means. Six helicopters were involved in the operation, according to information from participating agencies. The combination of ground forces and air support was deemed necessary to contain the spread of the fire in the hard-to-access woodland area.
