It bundles emergency calls and directs the operational forces in the Main-Kinzig district and beyond. The central task was to prevent the flames from spreading to residential areas and infrastructure.

The warning app Katwarn plays a central role in such situations. It transmits official hazard alerts directly to smartphones and contains specific behavioral instructions – in this case, closing windows and doors and switching off ventilation and air conditioning systems. This is intended to prevent smoke and ash particles from entering living spaces.

Residents were also asked to keep access routes to the fire sites clear so that fire engines and ambulances can approach without obstruction. Anyone living near a fire should also secure combustible materials outdoors and bring animals into enclosed spaces.

Causes and forest fire danger in Hesse

Forest fires in Hesse during the summer months are often triggered by a combination of high temperatures, prolonged drought, and flying sparks – for example, from trains, agricultural machinery, or improperly discarded cigarettes. The weather situation of recent days provided, in the assessment of the operational forces, ideal conditions for the rapid spread of fire.

Across Germany, forestry authorities and the Hessian State Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology are warning of an elevated forest fire danger. The second-highest warning level currently applies in several districts. Citizens are asked to use barbecue facilities only in designated areas and to avoid open fires in the forest.

The authorities announced that they would continue to monitor the situation and issue further warnings via Katwarn and other channels as needed. Police also increased their presence in the affected areas to keep onlookers away and ensure the safety of the emergency crews.

It is still unclear how large the area destroyed by the fires is and what damage has been done to flora and fauna. Forestry experts will inspect the affected wooded areas in the coming days to assess the extent and plan reforestation measures.
