Zeithain, June 30, 2026
The firefighting operation following the forest fire in the Gohrischheide in the district of Meißen will cost the municipality of Zeithain more than 500,000 euros according to an initial estimate, as Mayor Mirko Pollmer announced on Tuesday.
The forest caught fire on Saturday afternoon over an area of roughly 40 hectares, with approximately 16 hectares — terrain overgrown predominantly with shrubs and grass — burning according to municipal figures. Emergency crews battled the flames at temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius. Since Saturday, a total of 450 firefighters and helpers from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) had been deployed according to the administration. Two firefighting helicopters were used, and an armored tank firefighting vehicle from Saxony-Anhalt was requested, though it only arrived on the second day due to travel distances.
