Cotignac, July 22, 2026
A fast-growing forest fire in the southern French department of Var forced around 400 people to flee their homes on Tuesday and directly threatened three localities, including Cotignac.
Burning Mountain and Rapid Spread
According to the prefect of Var, Simon Babre, the fire spread down the Gros Bessillon mountain at very high speed. "Das Feuer bewegt sich mit sehr hoher Geschwindigkeit den Berg Gros Bessillon hinab – eine Geschwindigkeit, die so absolut nicht vorhersehbar war", Babre said according to consistent reports. Three localities were "threatened" by the flames, including Cotignac.
Within just a few hours, 1,700 hectares of land had already burned, according to figures cited by the prefect. Around 400 people had to leave their homes in great haste. The emergency services are facing a fire whose dynamics exceeded preparations.
