Near Neustrelitz in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district, a forest fire broke out on Wednesday on a former military training ground, which according to police has spread to more than 62 hectares.
A spokesperson for the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district said the fire had spread to more than 60 hectares by evening. According to police, the fire area has now grown to over 62 hectares. The fire occurred on a former military training area that, according to authorities, is contaminated with munitions.
Till Backhaus, Minister for the Environment of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (SPD), classified the situation as "Category 4." He told the media: "in dieses Gebiet, wo es aktuell brennt, darf niemand rein, auch kein Feuerwehrkamerad. Das ist einfach zu gefährlich." Due to the munitions contamination, the emergency services cannot enter the burning section of forest and cannot fight the fire directly.
