The forest fire in Müritz National Park has spread to around 318 hectares; around 370 emergency personnel are trying to contain the fire from the outside, while there is no end in sight for the major blaze.
The forest fire in Müritz National Park has kept emergency services on edge since Monday. According to the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district in Neubrandenburg, around 318 hectares are now affected. There was no all-clear by the evening.
Because of the dryness and the wind, the fire spread rapidly. It apparently started near the observation tower on the Käflingsberg. The plume of smoke was visible from several kilometers away.
Munitions in the ground hamper firefighting efforts
In the fire area, old munitions located on a former military training area keep exploding. These include larger calibers, said a spokesperson for the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. Munitions remnants from the World War II and East German eras are still in the ground, including large anti-tank mines. For this reason, the emergency services are not allowed to enter the fire area and must maintain a safety distance of around 1,000 meters. Direct firefighting is therefore not possible.
