Thomatal, 18 July 2026
A forest fire, likely triggered by a lightning strike, set around 300 square metres of forest ablaze near Thomatal in the Lungau district in the early hours of Saturday morning.
By late morning, "fire out" could be reported, according to the spokesperson for the fire services in the Lungau district. This brought the operation to a close after several hours. Prior to that, around 50 emergency personnel from the fire service, police, and Red Cross had been dispatched to the scene in the rugged alpine terrain.
Suspected lightning strike as the cause
According to initial findings, a lightning strike in the early morning hours is believed to have caused the forest fire. "Vermutlich ein Blitzschlag hat am Samstag in den frühen Morgenstunden einen Waldbrand im unwegsamen alpinen Gelände bei Thomatal (Bezirk Lungau) ausgelöst", reported Thomas Keidel, spokesperson for the fire services in the Lungau district. The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated.
