Madrid, July 20, 2026
A forest fire raging since Thursday about 100 kilometers northeast of Madrid has, according to authorities, already left more than 26,000 hectares of land destroyed and triggered the evacuation of around 1,200 people from 30 threatened localities.
The fire service and civil protection agency said on Monday via the online platform X that the flames had so far not spread to inhabited localities. The burned area corresponds to roughly 36,000 football pitches and has approximately doubled since Sunday. The fire has a perimeter of 120 kilometers.
Scale and course of the fire
According to the state broadcaster RTVE, the fire front is advancing at a speed of up to four kilometers per hour. Strong winds of around 50 kilometers per hour have further fanned the flames. The regional head of government of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, stated that 26,000 hectares have burned.
