Forest fire on Lake Garda forces vacationers in Tignale to flee

Water-bombing aircraft were requested, according to authorities, to battle the flames from the air. On the ground, several fire crews attempted to prevent the fire from spreading to residential areas.

A German tourist described the situation from her perspective: „Durch die Flucht vor den Flammen haben wir wohlbehalten die direkte Abreise angetreten. Glücklicherweise war unser Auto schon gepackt. Niemand kam zu Schaden und alle Hotelgäste konnten sich in Sicherheit bringen."

The municipality of Tignale lies on the western shore of Lake Garda and is one of the region's heavily frequented tourism hotspots. During peak season, thousands of vacationers stay there, which makes evacuations particularly complex.

Fire risk in Italy

According to initial findings by the emergency services, there are no indications of injuries. Authorities set up assembly points where those affected could register and be cared for.

Italy is experiencing an increased forest fire risk this summer. The combination of drought, heat and wind has, according to the national civil protection agency, worsened the conditions for fires.

Outlook

The emergency services announced they would continue to battle the blaze overnight. The municipal administration advised residents and tourists to avoid the area around Olzano for the time being and to pay attention to further announcements.

The weather development in the coming days will also be crucial: If the wind picks up or no rain falls, an expansion of the operation must be expected.
