Persistent drought, a lack of winter moisture, and a low-precipitation spring have raised the forest fire risk in Vienna to an acute level, according to the city and the professional fire department.

The soils in Vienna are currently very dry, according to the responsible municipal department MA 49. A lack of winter moisture and a dry spring had exerted "enormous stress" on the forest, according to MA 49. The recent days' precipitation had also been too brief and short-lived; the soil had not been able to absorb sufficient water.

Günther Annerl of MA 49 described the situation as serious. The forest fire risk was "wirklich dramatisch" in some areas, he said. He called on the population to take the danger seriously and expressed the hope that the city's residents would know "was sie an den Wiener Wäldern hätten".
