Trieste, 08 August 2026

Outbreaks of forest fires over the weekend in Friuli paralyzed several motorway slip roads on the connection between Venice and Trieste and severely disrupted travel.

The flames broke out in the Friuli region and quickly spread to the vicinity of the motorway between Venice and Trieste. Authorities closed several on- and off-ramps, including junctions near Villesse, Monfalcone, Duino and in the Redipuglia area, as the news agency ANSA reported, citing the regional civil protection agency. The accesses near Tarvi and on the section toward Lignano Sabbiadoro were also closed for safety reasons.

Extent of the Closures

According to the emergency services, the fire spread particularly quickly given the dry weather and wind conditions. Firefighting aircraft and numerous ground forces were deployed; at times, residents in surrounding municipalities had to be urged to keep windows and doors closed and stay away from the fire zones.
