Paris, 26 May 2026
France is experiencing an unprecedented May heatwave that intensified on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, with eight western departments placed on orange alert for a heatwave — the earliest such activation on record — while authorities warn of dangerous ozone levels.
Météo-France upgraded the vigilance level to orange for Finistère, Morbihan, Manche, Ille-et-Vilaine, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Vendée and Loire-Atlantique from midnight on the night of Monday to Tuesday. This is a step up from the yellow level that had been in effect since Sunday, when the intense heat episode began sweeping across the country.
The orange level corresponds to a full-blown heatwave, which can be officially declared if intense heat lasts at least three consecutive days and nights, posing a health risk to the entire exposed population. According to Météo-France, this heatwave alert system — which analyses both meteorological conditions and health risks — has never been activated so early in the year.
