Brühl, 16 July 2026
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron held the Franco-German Council of Ministers on Friday at Augustusburg Palace in Brühl and announced closer cooperation in defense, industry, and future technologies.
According to information from Augustusburg Palace, both countries want to strengthen joint defense and industry and to work more closely together on future issues such as artificial intelligence and the energy transition. The meeting in Rhineland's Brühl is regarded as a symbol of both governments' desire to revive bilateral relations after a period of estrangement.
Federal Chancellor Merz pointed to the historic significance of the venue. It was "the place, the spot, the palace" where France's then President Charles de Gaulle had offered Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer a Franco-German friendship treaty 65 years ago. The Élysée Treaty remains to this day "the basis for our work," Merz said.
