Brühl, July 17, 2026

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron met on Friday in North Rhine-Westphalia for the German-French government consultations, which featured a joint Ministerial Council at Augustusburg Castle in Brühl and a preceding Defense and Security Council at Nörvenich Air Base.

The meeting is considered politically particularly charged because it comes at a phase in which, according to both sides, Europe stands at a strategic new beginning. Upon Macron's arrival, Merz emphasized the historical significance of the location: 65 years ago, the then-French President Charles de Gaulle had proposed a friendship treaty to Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer at Augustusburg Castle, which was signed in 1963 at the Élysée Palace in Paris. This treaty remains "die Basis für unsere Arbeit", Merz said upon Macron's arrival.
