Pierre Dominique Prümm, board member at Fraport, said according to the statement: „Das modernisierte Terminal 2 wird ein zentraler Baustein unseres künftigen Hub-Systems sein – mit modernen Abläufen, hoher Flexibilität und einem deutlich verbesserten Reiseerlebnis für unsere Gäste." Passenger operations with more than 10 million passengers per year are then set to resume.

The airlines previously based in Terminal 2 have already been gradually relocating to the new Terminal 3, which was recently opened. According to Fraport, preparations and detailed construction planning are underway until 2030. The main construction measures are scheduled for 2030.

Impact on Transit Passengers

However, certain important infrastructure areas remain in operation, such as the baggage handling system, the underground parking garage, and the Skyline station. The latter is currently out of service, however. The reason is a technical overhaul. Replacement buses are currently shuttling along the route.

Once the system is operational again, it should also serve Terminal 2 again, according to a Fraport spokesperson. This means the connection between the terminals at Germany's by far largest international aviation hub will essentially be maintained: transit passengers continuing from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 will then be able to travel again via Terminal 2 on the transit train.

Timeline Until Reopening

Reopening is planned for the mid-2030s. With the modernization, Fraport aims to position Terminal 2 as a central element in the future hub of Germany's largest airport. In the coming years, travelers will need to prepare for changed routes between the terminals.
