The automated Skyline train at Frankfurt Airport restarted on Monday after a several-month forced hiatus, connecting the new Terminal 3 with the rest of the airport areas.

Background of the Forced Halt

The driverless transport system had been taken out of service at the end of May after recurring technical malfunctions. As a temporary replacement, the airport operator Fraport set up a bus shuttle between the terminals to transport travelers and employees along the route.

As Fraport announced, the causes of the failures were initially not identifiable. "Grund dafür waren wiederkehrende technische Störungen, deren Ursachen im Vorfeld nicht erkennbar waren und sich erst im laufenden Betrieb unter zunehmender Auslastung gezeigt haben," the company explained. Only through technical adjustments to the track, a comprehensive inspection of all vehicles, and several software updates was it possible to eliminate the sources of error: "Nach technischen Anpassungen an der Trasse, einer umfassenden Prüfung aller Fahrzeuge sowie mehreren Softwareupdates wurden die Ursachen der bisherigen Störungen behoben," Fraport stated.
