Skyline Train at Frankfurt Airport Resumes Operations

Initially Reduced Speed

The resumption of operations came only a few weeks after the official launch of the system. The now-resumed service is therefore initially set up cautiously: Up to eight vehicles are currently operating at a maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour. In regular service, the train is expected to transport up to 4,000 people per hour and cover the 5.6-kilometer route in around eight minutes, according to Fraport.

Before being taken out of service, the Skyline train was traveling at up to 70 kilometers per hour, according to Fraport. A company spokesperson announced the intention to return to this figure in the medium term: "Zuvor war die Bahn mit bis zu 70 Stundenkilometern unterwegs, diese Geschwindigkeit wollen wir auch perspektivisch wieder erreichen."

Nighttime Inspections and Bus Shuttle

Even after the resumption of operations, Fraport does not fully rule out individual technical malfunctions. To identify potential problems at an early stage, nighttime inspections of the route continue to be carried out. These checks and further optimizations were necessary to operate the facility on a permanently stable basis, it was said.

During these nighttime maintenance windows, the Skyline train's operations will continue to be suspended daily between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. until further notice. During this time, the bus shuttle will once again take over transport between the terminals. Fraport justified the arrangement with the aim of "die Einschränkungen für die Passagiere und die Beschäftigten möglichst gering zu halten."

Significance for Holiday Travel

The resumption of operations comes at a time of high passenger frequency: A few days later, the summer holidays begin in Hesse and other federal states. Frankfurt Airport expects significantly rising passenger numbers in the coming weeks, making the reliable operation of the internal connections between the terminals particularly important.

The Skyline train is the central internal means of transport for bringing travelers from the new Terminal 3 to the existing airport areas. It operates fully automatically, meaning without operating personnel, and is considered one of the most important infrastructure projects of the airport in recent years.
