PARIS, May 12, 2026
A French woman infected in a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship is critically ill and being treated with an artificial lung, a doctor at the Paris hospital caring for her said Tuesday.
Outbreak Reaches 11 Cases
The outbreak has now reached 11 total reported cases, nine of which have been confirmed, according to health officials. The latest confirmed case is a Spanish passenger who tested positive after being evacuated from the ship, Spain’s health ministry announced Tuesday.
All confirmed and suspected cases have been reported exclusively among passengers or crew of the cruise ship, according to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization. "At the moment, there is no sign that we are seeing the start of a larger outbreak," he said. However, he cautioned that "the situation could change, and given the long incubation period of the virus, it's possible we might see more cases in the coming weeks."
