From Warmuth's Jubilation to a World Cup Song: Band Zwirn Sets Austria's Cult Moment to Music

As the Mühlviertel newspaper reports, the band Zwirn has now turned the cult moment of jubilation into a song. In doing so, the musicians are picking up a tradition that is deeply rooted in Austria: After the legendary Cordoba match of 1978 against Germany, the then ORF presenter Edi Finger Senior had made football history with a striking utterance. At the time, the legendary commentary was simply: "I werd narrisch".

Already on Monday after the match, the two Austrian cabaret artists David Scheid and Omar Sarsam engaged in a musical competition for the most creative reinterpretation of the jubilation during the ORF live broadcast. Turntable artist Scheid mixed Warmuth's commentary live in the ORF sports studio into a slightly psychedelic drum-and-beat number, wore a Prohaska retro jersey while doing so, and pronounced the word as "deppat". Sarsam, in turn, reached for the loop machine, sang into the microphone with autotune distortion, and used the spelling "deppert" established as standard by the Duden.

Musical Contest in the ORF Studio

The elimination contest between the two cabaret artists ended, from the organizers' perspective, in a clean draw. The band Zwirn from the Mühlviertel then went one better and shaped the iconic cry of jubilation into an entire song, which is already being celebrated as Austria's unofficial World Cup anthem under the title "Bist du deppert". Fans and media have embraced the title enthusiastically.

Déjà Vu for Warmuth

For Warmuth himself, the event has since drawn parallels to earlier experiences. Back in 2024, he had witnessed Austria's deficit in the ice hockey World Cup match against Canada being turned from 1:5 into a 6:6 equalizer, commenting on it with similar emotion. The latest déjà vu moment was even more tremendous, however, as observers unanimously emphasize. Warmuth explained in this regard that such scenes are exactly what one works for as a sports commentator.

Outlook on the Round of 16 Against Spain

While the band Zwirn works on spreading their song, Austrian football fans are already looking ahead. On Thursday, the ÖFB team faces European champion Spain in the round of 16. The match kicks off at 9:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ORF1. That the atmosphere surrounding the team has received an additional boost in these days can be considered certain.

It remains to be seen whether Zwirn will play the song live in the ORF studio in the event of a possible further Austrian World Cup moment. Already now, the title is considered one of the most defining sentences of recent Austrian football history, slotting seamlessly into a series of legendary commentator lines.
