Füchse Berlin won their Champions League semifinal against the German champions and defending titleholders SC Magdeburg 40:35 (19:17) on Saturday at the Final Four in Cologne, thereby reaching the final.
Course of the semifinal
In front of 20,122 spectators at the Cologne Arena, an intense duel unfolded between the German champions and their "arch-rivals" from Berlin. The Füchse, who had lost the final against the same opponent the previous year, controlled large parts of the match and pulled away clearly at the end. Coach Bennet Wiegart saw his team's dream of defending the Champions League title burst.
The opening phase was evenly contested: in the 15th minute the score stood at 8:8 before the Füchse took a two-goal lead for the first time in the 16th minute (8:10). After a Magdeburg turnover, the Berlin side extended their advantage to three goals (10:13/18th minute). The team coached by Mathias Gidsel went into the changing rooms with a 19:17 lead, with the "World Handballer" finishing as his team's top scorer with nine goals.
