The parliamentary groups of the Union and SPD have agreed to let the fuel discount in effect since early May expire as planned on July 1, and have pledged swift countermeasures in the event of drastically rising fuel prices.
The parliamentary groups of the Union and SPD have agreed, according to information from the ARD capital studio, not to extend the fuel discount in effect since early May. As the parliamentary group deputies Sepp Müller (CDU) and Armand Zorn (SPD) confirmed to the Bild newspaper, the two-month tax cut is to end on schedule on June 30. "Der seit Anfang Mai geltende Tankrabatt endet wie geplant zum 1. Juli."
Both sides cite the tight budgetary situation as the reason. Müller explained that the fuel discount had worked well, but an extension was not feasible given the financial framework. "Wir können es uns in der aktuellen Lage nicht leisten, Schulden dafür aufzunehmen." The measure is estimated to cost around 1.6 billion euros.
