Prices for gasoline and diesel fell significantly in May 2026 as a result of the government's fuel rebate, according to data from ADAC and calculations by the Monopolkommission.

According to ADAC, a liter of Super E10 cost an average of 1.983 euros nationwide in May, compared to 2.109 euros in April. This represents a decrease of almost 13 cents. The price of diesel fell even more sharply: here, the liter price decreased from April to May by 27 cents to an average of 1.991 euros.

The background to this is the tax cut on gasoline and diesel of 17 cents per liter introduced by the federal government at the beginning of May. The measure is intended to cushion the oil price shock triggered by the Iran war for consumers and is valid for two months.

How much prices fell individually

In the first few days of May, however, only about 11 to 12 cents of the tax cut reached customers at the gas stations. Towards the end of the month, the rebate was increasingly passed on, albeit with fluctuations.
