Gaishorn am See, July 16, 2026

The Upper Styrian municipality of Gaishorn am See is switching off its public drinking water at night due to the ongoing drought and is, according to the Kronen Zeitung's assessment, the first municipality in Austria to have to take this step.

Starting situation: First shutdown in Austria

Since the beginning of this week, the drinking water supply in Gaishorn am See in the district of Liezen has been interrupted daily between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am. As Mayor Werner Haberl explained to the Kronen Zeitung, the measure is necessary because the elevated tanks can only refill sufficiently when consumption drops significantly during the nighttime hours. During the day, the population should continue to be supplied.
