Garmin Fenix 9 (Pro): AMOLED, Titanium, Satellite SOS

Garmin emphasizes that the satellite communication is specifically intended for multi-day expeditions or tours in regions without a cellular network. Via the new software feature Garmin Epic, activities over several days, weeks, or months can be combined into a shared story in Garmin Connect. Garmin explains the function in a product announcement: „Mit Garmin Epic lassen sich beispielsweise Aktivitäten über mehrere Tage, Wochen oder Monate in Garmin Connect zu einer gemeinsamen Tour beziehungsweise Geschichte zusammenfassen und mit Fotos ergänzen.“

In addition to the safety features, the watches continue to offer extensive sport and navigation functions. These include multi-part map views, elevation profiles, and a large number of sport profiles that Garmin has been maintaining in the Fenix series for years. The brighter AMOLED display is intended to improve readability in direct sunlight.

According to Garmin, the titanium case aims for higher robustness with lower weight compared to previous steel variants. Both models are water-resistant and suitable for use at high altitudes as well as diving, according to the manufacturer. The specific diving certifications have not been published in detail so far.

Case, Display, and Robustness

With the Locate function, users can transmit their location in real time to stored contacts. LiveTrack also makes it possible to share an ongoing activity with selected people so that they can follow the progress. In combination with the satellite module, this also works without a smartphone nearby, according to the manufacturer.

Garmin has not communicated official prices for the German-speaking market at launch. In the USA, the Fenix 9 is offered in several case variants; prices are in the upper four-digit range depending on the configuration. Experience shows that the Pro variants with satellite functionality are more expensive than the standard models.

Market Launch and Prices

According to Garmin, delivery of the Fenix 9 and the Fenix 9 Pro is to begin in the coming weeks. At the same time, the software update for Garmin Connect will be rolled out, which is intended to make the Epic function available for older watches as well. Details on compatibility and the scope of functions on older devices will be provided by Garmin shortly, according to the announcement.

With this move, Garmin is responding to growing competition in the outdoor smartwatch segment. Competitors such as Apple, Samsung, and Huawei now also offer models with emergency functions or satellite connections. Garmin is attempting to differentiate itself through the combination of robustness, battery life, and emergency communication.
