IERAPETRA, Crete — May 1, 2026 Gaza aid flotilla diverted to Crete after Israeli interception

The Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of around 30 boats carrying aid for Gaza, has unexpectedly docked at the port of Ierapetra in southeastern Crete after being intercepted by the Israeli navy.

Organizers confirmed the arrival in safe waters and stated they were regrouping to continue their mission to break what they describe as the "illegal blockade" of the Gaza Strip. The diversion follows a nighttime interception by Israeli forces, which detained 175 individuals and redirected over 20 ships.

Israeli Navy Intercepts Flotilla

Israeli naval forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters on Thursday night, arresting 175 activists and escorting the vessels to Crete. The detained individuals were initially brought to the small port of Atherinolakos in southeastern Crete before being transferred to Heraklion, the island’s largest city.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry stated that two activists would be taken to Israel for questioning, alleging one had connections to a terrorist organization and the other was involved in illegal activities. The ministry did not provide further details about the suspects or the nature of the accusations.

Greece agreed to accept the detained individuals and facilitate their return to their respective countries of origin. The move comes amid heightened tensions over maritime aid shipments to Gaza, which Israel has long restricted, citing security concerns.
