Siracusa, Sicily — April 26, 2026

A fleet of 56 ships carrying pro-Palestinian activists and aid supplies set sail from Sicily toward the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, marking the latest attempt to breach Israel’s longstanding maritime blockade of the contested territory.

The "Global Sumud Flotilla," comprising mostly private sailboats and motor vessels, departed from a port near Siracusa after weather-related delays, according to organizers. The convoy includes vessels from the Spanish aid group Open Arms and Greenpeace’s "Arctic Sunrise," signaling broad international participation.

Previous Attempts and Challenges

This is not the first time the flotilla has sought to reach Gaza. Last fall, Israeli special forces intercepted the same coalition of ships, preventing them from entering the coastal enclave. "Bei einem vorherigen Versuch war die vorwiegend aus privaten Segel- und Motorbooten bestehende 'Global Sumud Flotilla' vergangenen Herbst von israelischen Spezialeinheiten gestürmt und am Erreichen des Gebiets gehindert worden," organizers noted, underscoring the risks of confrontation.

The activists aim to challenge the Israeli-Egyptian blockade, imposed in 2007 after Hamas took control of Gaza. The restrictions have severely limited the flow of goods and humanitarian aid, drawing criticism from rights groups. The flotilla’s mission is symbolic as much as practical, seeking to highlight what participants describe as collective punishment of Gaza’s 2 million residents.
