General Overhaul of the Hagen–Wuppertal–Cologne Rail Line: Opening Overshadowed by New Problems

According to a railway spokesperson, train traffic can take place on the line, but not at full capacity. The second track remains passable at normal speed. There were also further restrictions over the weekend due to so-called "consolidation runs" (Belastungsfahrten), in which trains travel at reduced speed in order to compact the fresh ballast of the track bed. Because of a failed tender, these consolidation runs must be carried out during ongoing operations.

The affected bridge near Opladen in the vicinity of Leverkusen had not been renewed as part of the completed corridor renovation, as earlier inspections — most recently at the end of 2025 — had shown no damage. Inspectors have now determined that the structure is so severely damaged that the line can only be operated on a single track in sections. As part of the general overhaul, four of 89 bridges on the line had been repaired. According to the portal Zuginfo.nrw, there were delays, stops and partial cancellations on the Hagen–Wuppertal–Cologne section.

Consolidation Runs Slow Down Operations

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) announced a fundamental review of the corridor renovation concept. One must evaluate whether four general overhauls per year make sense and whether they should be distributed more evenly across regions. In its general renovations, Deutsche Bahn completely closes important long-distance routes for several months in order to carry out fundamental repairs. On the line, a speed limit of 70 kilometers per hour applies for the time being due to the ongoing consolidation runs.

Minister Announces Review

Just a few weeks ago, several failed signal boxes around Wuppertal had paralyzed rail traffic on the sections not closed for the general overhaul for about two weeks. Deutsche Bahn stated that it would provide information on the scope and duration of the bridge repairs as soon as reliable statements were possible. When the construction work on the bridge near Opladen will be completed remained unclear for the time being.

The ceremonial opening of the line on Friday was actually intended to mark a milestone for the heavily used connection in Germany's most populous federal state. However, the start of the new operations is overshadowed by the new restrictions. Thousands of commuters must continue to expect delays.

Incendiary Device Paralyzes Düsseldorf–Cologne Line

Independently of the railway line, Deutsche Bahn is also attracting attention in another case: between Düsseldorf and Cologne, rail traffic was apparently paralyzed by left-wing extremist criminals. As the Cologne public prosecutor's office and police announced, the investigators assume that a fire was set deliberately. A claim of responsibility appeared on the portal indymedia.org.

The incident shows that the already strained situation in the rail network in North Rhine-Westphalia can be further aggravated by acts of sabotage. Travelers on the heavily used axis between the Ruhr area and the Rhineland must continue to expect disruptions.
