The German cabinet approved a driver's license reform bill on Wednesday (20.05.26) to make obtaining a license simpler and more affordable.
Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder called the driver's license 'a key to personal freedom,' especially in areas with limited public transport. 'Mobility must not be a privilege,' he stated during the announcement.
The reform proposes eliminating fixed requirements for special drives like night or highway practice sessions. Instead, there will be more flexibility in training approaches.
Minister Schnieder emphasized the need for nationwide uniformity: 'We need federal regulations to create clarity for everyone.' He criticized state-level solutions as insufficient for resolving legal questions.
