Valga, June 30, 2026
The German-Dutch Corps on Tuesday officially took over command of NATO land forces for the defense of Estonia and Latvia in the Estonian-Latvian border town of Valga, thereby establishing a second tactical headquarters for the region.
The ceremony was attended by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD), who assessed the handover as evidence of the growing operational capability of European alliance partners. According to information from Estonia, the SPD politician had traveled specifically to the city of Tartu to take part in the celebrations. During his appearance, Pistorius said: „Das Korps ist ein Vorbild für die europäische Verteidigungszusammenarbeit und beweist, dass multinationale Integration uns stärker, leistungsfähiger und effektiver macht."
The corps, which is headquartered in Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia and has existed since 1995, takes over the task from a previously responsible NATO headquarters in Poland. In the future, the unit will be responsible for military exercises and, in the event of an emergency, for the defense of the eastern alliance territory. According to NATO, the headquarters can command an international force of around 50,000 soldiers and has led several international missions in the past.
